Can Art Therapy Help PTSD? How Creativity Heals Trauma

Read Time: 6 Minutes ————————————————————

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) affects millions of people worldwide, making daily life feel like an uphill battle. Traditional talk therapy can be helpful, but for many, words alone aren’t enough to process trauma. This is where art therapy steps in, providing a powerful, nonverbal way to access and heal painful memories.

How Art Therapy Supports PTSD Recovery

PTSD is often stored in the body and subconscious, making it difficult to articulate through speech. Art therapy helps by engaging different parts of the brain, allowing emotions and memories to be processed in a safer, less overwhelming way. Studies show that creative expression can reduce PTSD symptoms by lowering stress hormones, improving emotional regulation, and fostering a sense of control. (Source)

Art Therapy Techniques for PTSD Healing

These art-based approaches can help individuals process trauma and regain a sense of safety:

1. Visual Journaling 📓

  • Using a journal for drawing, painting, or mixed media can provide an ongoing space to express emotions without judgment. This journal also creates a container for big feelings so they don’t spill over into other areas of your life. Metaphorically you can sit with these emotions, create art, and then close the journal, shelf it and continue on with your day. When you are ready you can come back to this journal at any time. Think of it as a place to dump, and hold emotions, outside of the body!

2. Safe Place Imagery 🌿

  • Create an image of a place that feels secure, whether real or imagined. This can serve as a grounding tool during moments of distress. This place can be a real place, or an imaginary place. Think about colours, textures, smells, sounds you might hear in this safe place! When you finish creating this image, give yourself some time to visualize yourself in this space engaging in all the wonderful sensations! Notice how your body feels.

3. Mask-Making 🎭

  • Designing a mask allows individuals to explore hidden emotions and identities, helping to externalize inner experiences in a tangible way. The outside of the mask may represent the version of you the world gets to see and the inside can represent what you don’t show others. Are they similar? Different?

4. Trauma Narrative Through Art 🎨

  • Rather than verbally recounting traumatic events, individuals can illustrate their stories, helping to process and reframe their experiences at their own pace. When the trauma occurred you did not have a say in how it played out, but by making art, and bringing the art into the space where it is tangible you now have choice in how the story ends. How can you change the image? Add more, take away, etc. You get to be as creative as you want! How does that feel to change the story?

Art Therapy vs. Traditional PTSD Treatments

While traditional therapy methods like Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) are effective, art therapy offers a unique, complementary approach. It helps those who struggle with verbal expression or who feel disconnected from their emotions. The combination of both approaches can provide a more holistic healing process.
